Crochet Holiday Potholder

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY
The Famous «PURITAN» CROCHET COTTON, Article 40
1 ball each Red and White or colors desired and
«STAR» SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY COTTON, Article 50
1 skein Red or Lt. Emerald will make two pot holders.
Steel crochet hook No. 7 or No. 8.

Starting at top with Red ch 29, 2 d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each of the next 24 sts of ch, 3 d c in last st, ch 3, turn. The ch 3 counts as 1 d c at beginning of each row.
2nd Row. 2 d c in same space (an increase of 2 d c), 1 d c in each of the next 28 d c, 3 d c in 3rd st of ch (an increase of 2 d c), ch 3 to turn all rows.
Next 3 Rows. Working in d c, increase 2 d c at beginning and end of each row (46 d c in last row).
6th Row. Increase 1 d c at beginning and end of row.
7th Row. Increase 2 d c at beginning and end of row, cut Red.
8th Row. Attach White, ch 3, 2 d c in same space, 1 d c in each d c, working 3 d c in 3rd st of end ch.
9th and 10th Rows. Increase 1 d c at beginning and end of each row. Work 2 rows even.
13th Row. Increase 1 d c at beginning and end of row. Work 5 rows even.
19th and 20th Rows. Decrease 1 d c at beginning and end of each row (to decrease: * thread over hook, insert in next d c, pull loop through and work off 2 loops, repeat from * once, thread over and work off all loops at one time). Work 1 row even.
22nd Row. Same as 19th row, cut White.
23rd Row. Attach Red, ch 3, decrease in next 2 sts, decrease in next 2 sts, 1 d c in each of the next 47 d c, decrease in next 2 sts, decrease in next 2 sts.
Next 4 Rows. Decrease 2 d c at beginning and end of each row.
Next Row. Decrease 3 sts each side, decreasing in same man­ner as previous rows, ch 1, turn.
Next Row. Insert hook in 1st st, pull loop through, insert in next st, pull loop through, thread over and work off all loops at one time, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 s d c in each of the next 3 sts (s d c: thread over hook, insert in st, pull loop through, thread over and work off all loops at one time), 1 d c in each of the next 16 d c, 1 s d c in each of the next 3 d c, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, s c decrease in next 2 sts, ch 1, turn.
Next Row. S c decrease in 1st 2 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts, 1 s d c in each of the next 5 sts, 1 d c in each of the next 8 sts, 1 s d c in each of the next 5 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts, s c decrease in next 2 sts, cut thread. Work another section in same manner.
With Red or Lt. Emerald «STAR» SIX STRAND EMBROI­DERY COTTON crochet a ch about 20 inches long. Sew in center of White section sewing to the 5 center rows as illus­trated. Crochet the 2 sections together with a row of s c using Red on Red sections and White on White sections. With Lt. Emerald or Red cover a bone ring with s c and sew to top of potholder.
