Required Supplies:
- RED HEART® Shimmer®: 2 balls each of 1536 Purple A and 1931 Purple Haze B
- Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 5.5mm [US I-9]
- Yarn needle
Cowl measures 6” (15 cm) wide x 50” (127 cm) on circumference.
NOTE
Each round is fastened off as it is completed, and then the piece is turned so you are working from the other side, and the next round is started at any point. This will create a staggered starting point for each round so there is no visible seam on your finished cowl.
Color Sequence:
Work in the following color sequence throughout: *1 row A; 1 row B; repeat from * throughtout.
Special Abbreviations
Foundation half double crochet (Fhdc): Leaving a sewing length, ch 3, yarn over, insert hook in 3rd chain from hook, yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 1 loop on hook (chain made), yarn over and draw through all loops on hook (1 Fhdc made), *yarn over, insert hook under the 2 loops of the “chain” stitch of last stitch and pull up loop, yarn over and draw through 1 loop on hook (chain made), yarn over and draw through all loops on hook (next Fhdc made); repeat from * to for desired number of Fhdc.
Front Post half double crochet (FPhdc): Yarn over, insert hook from front to back to front again around the post of the hdc in the row below, yarn over and draw through (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all loops.
Standing Front Post half double crochet (SFPhdc): This stitch is used to start a round with a new strand of yarn, without having to use a starting chain. Make a slip knot in yarn and place the loop over the hook, yarn over, insert hook from front to back to front again around the post of the hdc in the row below, yarn over and draw through (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all loops.
COWL
Round 1: Work 180 Fhdc, slip st to top of first Fhdc to form a ring, being careful not to twist foundation – 180 sts. Fasten off.
Round 2: Turn, choose a place to start this round where there are no other rounds started, SFPhdc in any st in previous round, FPhdc in each sts around; join with a slip st in top of beg SFPhdc – 180 sts. Fasten off.
Rounds 3-30: Maintaining color sequence as established, repeat Round 2. Fasten off.
FINISHING
With sewing length, sew base of first Fhdc of Round 1. Weave in ends.
