Crochet Snowflake Lace Square

Materials:

Worsted Weight yarn in white and background color
(I used Red Heart Supersaver yarn)
Size H hook (5.00mm)
Yarn needle (to weave in ends)

Finish Size: 6”h x 6”w inches

Different Stitches:

Extended Double Crochet (EDC)-Yarn over, insert hook in specified st, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, draw thru one loop, yarn over, draw thru two loops, yarn over, draw thru last two loops.


Directions:

Snowflake part:

Rnd 1: With white ch5, join with sl st to first chain to form ring, ch1, 12 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc.
(12sc)

Rnd 2: Ch1, 1 sc in same st as joining, [ch3, skip next st, 1 sc in next st] Do this 5 times, ch1, skip next st, join with hdc to first sc.
(6sc, 6-ch3 spaces) (ch1+hdc counts as first ch3 space)

Rnd 3: Ch1, 1 sc in first ch3 space (working around post of hdc), [ch3, 1 sc in next ch3 space, ch3, 1 sc in same ch3 space] Do this 5 times, ch3, 1 sc in same ch3 space as first sc, ch1, join with hdc to first sc.
(12sc, 12-ch3 spaces) (ch1+hdc counts as first ch3 space)

Rnd 4: Ch1, 1 sc in first ch3 space, [3 sc in next ch3 space, (2 sc, ch2, 2 sc) all in next ch3 space] Do this 5 times, 3 sc in next ch3 space, (2 sc, ch2, 1 sc) all in same ch3 space as first sc, join with sl st to first sc.
(42sc, 6-ch2 spaces)

Rnd 5: Sl st in front loop only of each of the next 3 sts, sl st in each of the next 2 sts, sl st in next ch2 space, ch3, sl st in same ch2 space, ch4, sl st in same ch2 space, ch3, sl st in same ch2 space, [sl st in each of the next 2 sts, sl st in front loop only of each of the next 3 sts, sl st in each of the next 2 sts, sl st in next ch2 space, ch3, sl st in same ch2 space, ch4, sl st in same ch2 space, ch3, sl st in same ch2 space] Do this 5 times, sl st in next sc, join with sl st to joining sl st of Rnd 4.
(66 sl sts, 12- ch3 loops, 6-ch4 loops)

Finish off and weave in ends.

Note: You’ll working behind the snowflake.

Background part:

Rnd 1: With the right side of the Snowflake towards you working from behind (back of) Snowflake join background color with sl st to any sc on Rnd 1 (of snowflake) you skipped from working Rnd 2 (of snowflake), ch5, [2 dc in next skipped st, ch2] Do this 5 times, 1 dc in same st as beginning sl st, join with sl st to 3rd chain of beginning ch5.
(12dc, 6-ch2 spaces) (Beginning ch5 counts as dc and ch2)

Rnd 2: Ch1, 1 hdc in same st as joining, 2 hdc in next ch2 space, [1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next ch2 space] Do this 5 times, 1 hdc in next st, join with sl st to first hdc.
(24 hdc)

Note: On Rnd 3 you’re working the stitches of Background part together with the back loops left free from working some of the stitches on Rnd 5 in front loops only of Snowflake part. You’ll do this by inserting hook in the free back loop (on Snowflake part) before inserting hook into stitch on Back ground part, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, draw thru both loops on hook. You’ve just join the 2 parts together with a sc.

The Only time you’re not also working in Snowflake is when you’re skipping a stitch on Background part.

Rnd 3: Sl st in next st on Background part, ch1, 1 sc in same st as sl st also going thru first free back loop on Snowflake part you come to, 2 sc in next st also going thru next free back loop on Snowflake part, 1 sc in next st also going thru next free back loop on Snowflake part, [ch2, skip next st on Background part, 1 sc in next st also going thru next free back loop on Snowflake part you come to, 2 sc in next st also going thru next free back loop on Snowflake part, 1 sc in next st also going thru next free back loop on Snowflake part] Do this 5 times, ch2, join with sl st to first sc.
(24sc, 6-ch2 spaces)

Rnd 4: Ch2, 1 dc in same st as joining, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, [4 dc in next ch2 space, 1 dc in each of the next 4 sts] Do this 5 times, 4 dc in next ch2 space, join with sl st to first dc.
(48dc) (Beginning ch2 does not count as dc)

Note: On Rnd 5 you’re going to join the tips of the Snowflake to the Background Part to keep them from curling up. You’ll do this when working a specified stitch by inserting hook in ch4 loop of Snowflake part before inserting hook into stitch on background part, then finish working specified stitch. Only also work in ch4 loop when instructed to.
